What's Behind Your Surname?

Have you ever wondered where your surname came from?  Surnames were non existent until after the 12th century.  Many of the Greek surnames derived from the first name of the father.  For instance,  if the surname is Demetrios, the name came from a father whose name was Demetrios; in other words - son of Demetrios.  Females used the feminine version of the masculine name.

The name could also have originated from the trade the family was in.
